AND WE ARE HAVING AN ABSOLUTE BLAST

BELOW YOU WILL FIND LINKS TO THE FEATURED ARTISTS ALONG WITH BASIC NOTES EXPLAINING MUSICAL CHOICES AND INSPIRATIONS

I thought that I was being extra clever/ambitious, and economical at the time to put together a journey tape that lasted for two hours.

Sadly, the actual cassette is of inferior quality to the standard 90 minute tapes, and has long since failed to play at a sensible speed. Therefore, vital that I reassembled my original journey project in a digital format

LAIKA - H-FOUNDATION

Talk about leaving things to the last minute...

I really couldn't source a digital file for this anywhere, and was resigned to using the sub standard recording from the 12" that I owned (picked up completely out of the blue many years later). The final mix has been finished for a while now, leaving these notes to complete the night before the day of uploading.

I thought I'd give the show a final listen as I go through the write up, but was nowhere near 100% happy with the quality of this track.

Literally, as I write this, I've just unearthed a superior quality recording, so will have to make the necessary adjustments........Enjoy!

I suppose I should really mention just how much I love this track, ever since recording it from a 1994 John Peel show, it did prove very popular with my passengers over the years as well.

Since then, I have developed separately into a highly tuned fanatic of the James Bond formula. Of course, I was over the moon to recognise that this had been sampled from the John Barry score to From Russia With Love.

TECHNIQUE I FOLLOW - SHAOLIN WOODEN MEN

This was identified by the song title alone, as I didn't label the artists correctly when recording from the radio.

STIGMATA - MINISTRY

Featured in the fairly recent film, Atomic Blonde ('17) with Charlize Theron. Fortunately, I managed to catch that in the cinema, when I used to do that sort of thing....a lot, and was very happy to be reminded of this journey tape.

BAND ON THE RUN (SEGMENT) - PAUL McCARTNEY & WINGS

I really like the opening parts of this song, can't stand the bits I've edited out though.

CHINA GIRL - DAVID BOWIE

Who knew that this song could have had such a major influence in a key life decision?

I've since found out that the title is not literal at all, co-written with Iggy Pop and a euphemism for heroin. Had I have known that, I wonder if my life would have turned out differently, and I'm not talking hard drugs.

TELEPHONE THING - THE FALL

The Fall would feature regularly on my favourite radio show during the 90's, and this track stood out by a mile for being worthy of inclusion.

THE GIRL ON DEATH ROW - TINDERSTICKS

I really couldn't source a decent quality file of this either, resorting to a very strange version from YouTube.

Again. Literally, as I write these notes, I've just unearthed a superior quality recording, so will have to make the necessary adjustments........Enjoy!

WITHIN WITHOUT YOU - SONIC YOUTH

No such problem with this. Although, at the time of the original journey tape, this was additional, hard to get hold of, and deemed very special when Sonic Youth music is very high up on your shopping list.

I can't honestly remember whether or not it was a concious decision to link this with the next track, but It is very pleasing to hear the Eastern themes match up so well.

SKIDOO (PEEL SESSION) - LOOP GURU

Simply labelled as Ethnic Groove in my journey tape notes. Shazam also failed repeatedly in my attempts to identify it, so this proved tricky to add.

I kind of half suspected it was Loop Guru, and over the last year or so, have been going through all the recorded product at my disposal to include this, but absolutely nothing turned up.

Thankfully, I never gave up and stumbled across it on YouTube, so I could see exactly what is was called and where it came from.

HIGHWAY CHILE - THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE

May as well.

I've just decided to dedicate some serious listening time to Jimi!

THAT'S ALL - GENESIS

I like this!

I think this is the only Genesis song in my library.

BREAK OF DAWN - RHYTHM ON THE LOOSE

This was taken from one of Ryan Reeves up-tempo rave tapes that we used to listen to in his white sirroco.

SKINK - SONIC YOUTH

From the performance at The Pheonix Festival which I attended with the esteemed HEAVY PC, and was very fresh in my mind.

ONCE WHILE BUSY COUNTING VIRTUES (PEEL SESSION) - DROME

The craziest thing ever to be included in any of my journey tapes, and probably the reason I decided to opt for a two hour duration.

LIQUID - STEVE STOLL

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!

LIVE AND LET DIE - PAUL McCARTNEY & WINGS

The best Bond theme to the best Bond film, no question!

JIVING SISTER FANNY - THE ROLLING STONES

May as well.

From The London Years, my favourite period of The Stones, by far.

DAYS PASSED - SCORN

This album was bought on the strength of John Peel being quite taken with them.

PRESSURE - RACHEL WALLACE

I suspect that this was from a similar up-tempo rave tape as mentioned previously.

SOUR TIMES - PORTISHEAD

The first time I heard this, I knew instantly that I had to include it. But what I didn't expect was just how popular they would become.

THE GIRL ON DEATH ROW - DUANE EDDY & LEE HAZLEWOOD

Typical John Peel to include two different versions for me to use here.

Continuing the twang.

LE SINESTRA - EURYTHMICS

Fitting in rather well.

USELESS LANDSCAPE - MOVIETONE

One of the first tracks successfully identified and purchased after investing in a cassette player.

THE W - WU-TANG CLAN

The Wu-Tang sent this back in time for me to lead into an Autechre track.

Admittedly, a complete accident, but I'm not changing it now.

I said things are going to get strange!

 SILVERSIDE - AUTECHRE

Incorrectly titled by me as Symphony Of Beats.
