I can't quite remember why I decided to start with this track, but knowing the way I approach mix tapes, I'm guessing that I wanted to open with something relatively hard to come by and unexpected.
Well done Meech - 95, it's still hard to come by, so we have to make do with a retail link to the physical media. Not technically an Orb track, but you get the idea.
Included here for the same reasons, and I would have been very pleased that it didn't appear on any album at the time. Fortunately, it does now and you will find a link above. This always featured in their live shows and was probably better known for that reason.
I still remember them playing on the same evening as Primal Scream at Glastonbury in '92 and this was extended out to quite a length in it's live form.
This features on their first album, so a bit more conventional than the opening two numbers, something I wanted to separate from the familiar surroundings of the LP and use with a different run of material.
If only I had known back then, that these two tracks layer with each other so well. The tape-to-tape technique had its use at the time, but - WOW!
As above, and another conventional album track that I needed to pluck and use as part of a new mix.
I still have solid memories of The Orb show at Glastonbury the following year and this track in particular, as it was completely new at the time and non album. Although, I don't remember any other thing about the entire weekend at all????
I don't know who I went with, how I got there, or what happened?
If anyone can help me fill in the gaps, I would be most grateful?
*please note, this was not due to a Rock'n Roll lifestyle or any hedonistic activity.
POMME FRITZ (MEAT 'N VEG) - THE ORB
I still remember buying this (mini) album from Pinpoint, fairly close to the day of release and felt rather confused when I first heard it. A few of the tracks make for a challenging listen, and would not go down too well when playing on a journey tape. Using the standout tracks in this way encouraged continued appreciation of my favourite parts.
PERPETUAL DAWN (ULTRABASS II) - THE ORB
Andrew Weatherall on remix duty here - 'not bad'.
Another great track from Pomme Fritz that was in danger of not getting enough play time in the car.
I must confess to altering history to suit here. This, although released in the 90's, didn't appear on the original PLANET ORB that used to get played in the car. I plan to issue a 2000+ mix in the future, so this track would get left out as it falls after my original mix and just before the year 2000.
When everything was tightened up and mixed, I ended up with space that did not exist before, so had to include it here for those reasons. I also have very fond memories of this and associate it heavily with living in London during the late 90's - The God of Compilations is looking upon me favourably here, and I'm extremely glad.
FAST FORWARD YHE FUTURE - ZODIAC YOUTH
One more track that isn't technically The Orb, I think this is more of a pseudonym than a collaboration though, but I think Alex Paterson probably collaborated when recording under a pseudonym anyway.
Looking at it now, I think I just wanted to take my favourites from Pomme Fritz and pad the rest of the mix out with highlights from other releases.
One more that I associate heavily with seeing the live show, and it seemed to go on forever.
For me at the time, this was very welcome, and has enhanced my enjoyment of it ever since.
